About me

About Me

My name is Luana Olcese. I am 16 years old & Peruvian. I am currently a student of the International Baccalaureate program in San Silvestre School.

As a part of the IB program I must fulfill a CAS Blog where I’ll record the activities I will be doing from 2019-2020.

I enjoy diverse activities such as cooking vegan food, photography & film. Truthfully I have never enjoyed sports, but because of a health problem I must perform physical activity. For the past year i’ve been practicing yoga and recently decided to try out Pilates.

I have never explored many of the activities school has offered me, but i’ve decided that since this is my last official school year I want to do so.

Anyhow, I do consider myself to be extremely responsible and organized. I always give my best in everything i’m involved in and can sometimes overcharge myself with work, but because of this I tend to get stressed easily and without even acknowledging it. So, one of my goals for the following months is to get better in stress management and i’m sure I will.

I chose IB because I feel that this program will allow me to gain knowledge I won’t find anywhere else and simultaneously help me grow. I have still not decided what I want to study, but I do have an idea, which is to study communications and then vegan cuisine. I want to study cuisine because my life-long dream is to have my own vegan restaurant.

Yoga Iyengar

activity

What is Yoga?

A physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in ancient India.  The word, yoga, comes from the Sanskrit yuj, which means “to yoke” and “samadhi” or “concentration.” Thus, yoga is the practice that aims to join the mind, body and spirit. The ultimate goal of yoga is to achieve liberation.

What is Yoga Iyengar?

It’s a yoga method developed by B.K.S Iyengar, the one’s that follow his method are known to practice ‘Yoga Iyengar’

Since March 2019, I’ve restarted practicing Yoga. I had begun in August 2017 and stopped in November 2018 because of a medical condition. Usually, I tend to practice twice or three times a week along with my mother & a professional yoga instructor – Sonia. We usually practice postures that will be beneficial to us & our condition, allowing us to breath deeply and be focused. Our instructor, always challenges us by doing difficult postures (2), making us get out of our comfort zone. She always helps us identify our strengths & areas of weakness so that in the future we’re aware of our mistakes (1).

Vida Wasi

creativity, service

What is Vida Wasi?

Vida Wasi is a “non-profit civil association, whose priority is to provide adequate oncological care for the most needy children of our country, so we are building in the Sacred Valley of the Incas the First Pediatric Cancer Hospital. – According to their official website.

How did I go to this organization?

I was able to discover this incredible organization because of my school’s link with it. So, after getting to know more about the project, the school thought it would be a good idea to visit the hospital during our stay in Cuzco, in the prom trip. I was able to visit the hospital on May & meet some children that will be receiving treatment as soon as the hospital is finished. I was assigned to help with painting, so I made an incredible effort and made a beautiful pink pot where diverse flowers may be grown. I loved the experience and would like to visit sometime soon!

Since April 2019 I began going to a public school called ‘Rebeca Carrión’ where my purpose is to play with the kids and get to know them better. I’ve been going every Tuesday since then and i’ve enjoyed every second.

The school assigned me 5 wonderful kids whom I’ll be accompanying this whole year. Their names are – Josué, Ariana, Brisa, Mayra & Dario

Each visit, my group and I plan activities for them to enjoy, some examples of the activities we’ve done so far and desire to do in the future are – Origami, Ceramics and Painting.

First visit to Rebeca Carrión

In my first visit to ‘Rebeca Carrión’ we chose pairs & were assigned a table to work with. I met 5 children that would work with me all year long. We brought color pencils as well as paper with diverse animals and told them they could paint, they were extremely creative and created amazing work! I was truly impressed by their abilities. We talked as they painted and got to know more about each one of them, such as,: their favorite foods, tv show, movie and things to do on their free time! We shared stories and made jokes. It was a wonderful visit overall.

Tuesday 4th of June

A large group of girls and I, went walking to the school ‘Rebeca Carrión’ which is located nearby San Silvestre. As we arrived, we heard desperate screams of excitement coming from the kids, they were overwhelmed with happiness and we couldn’t be happier to see them again. We had planned to do a dance session in this visit, so, we brought out a speaker and played the music they liked the most. We taught them diverse dance moves and they happily danced along. We had lots of fun together and were sad when we had to leave.

Pilates

activity

On March 2019 I began practicing Pilates. I decided to do so because of a problem I have on my back. I was told Pilates would help me tremendously so I took the challenge and booked a class. At first I didn’t know whether I’d like it or not, but as time passed I understood it’s impact on me physically and emotionally, and how empowered I felt while practicing it. I truly enjoy Pilates and definitely encourage others to try it as well.

I currently practice in a small house located in Barranco – District in Lima. I go to the studio twice or three times a week & my sessions last about 1 hour.
